Introducing Patriot!

If only horses could talk, Patriot would have quite the story to tell. He was originally believed to be a 6 year-old colt who had been pulled off range at age 3. After being castrated, he sat in a pen for about a year and a half before being rescued by a kind woman who began the work of halter-breaking him and showing him compassion. For another year and a half, she cared for him, but despite her efforts, Patriot remained shut down—extremely reactive and spooky, never fully connecting.

When we conducted his initial workup and checked his teeth, we discovered a surprise: Patriot wasn’t 6 years old—he was closer to 16. That meant he had lived as a wild stallion on the range for roughly 13 years.

It’s no wonder he was so shut down and fearful. His body tells the story of survival, scars from a cougar attack and bite wounds across nearly every inch of him. Life hasn’t been easy for Patriot. And yet, he is one of the kindest souls.

Day by day, he is emerging from his shell. He now enjoys scratches and meets us eagerly at the gate every morning, ready for turnout.

Patriot is not yet ready for adoption, and still continues his training with our staff but he's already learned to pick up all 4 feet, wear a blanket, go into the wash rack for a bath and much more!
